Music Awards Turns ‘Who You Know’ Awards

Okra Tom Dawidi
Ghanaian Hip life sensation Okra Tom Dawidi has taken a swipe at Charter House, organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), describing the entire event as ‘Who You Know’ awards.
“The board, academy and organizers of the VGMA are not doing the right thing.  Now the whole event has become a ‘who you know thing’.
If you know someone there who will be fighting on your behalf then you will take all the awards,” the ‘Do Da Dance’ singer told NEWS ONE.
The musician complained that an artiste whose managers do not have links with the organizers or a member of the board is not likely to bag any nomination.
He said this situation does not allow for a true reflection on which musician is really worthy of an award and which musician is just being favoured by the organizers.
“We even have a situation where some members of the board have a direct interest in some musicians and I wonder how a conflict of interest would not occur…I don’t really understand the concept behind the whole thing because there is nothing Ghanaian about it.
There is no monitoring agency that checks the dates that artistes drop their songs and what goes into it and all,” Okra told NEWS ONE.
Okra Tom who is making a comeback from his 4-year musical hibernation told NEWS ONE in an exclusive interview that there are various musicians in the industry who are pushing to fly the flag of Ghana high but are not being recognized.
Various stakeholders in the industry like Guru, Asem and Nana Omane  Acheampong among others have recently raised genuine concerns about the way the VGMA organizers compile their nominations list.
It would be recalled that Asem, in an interview with radio and Television personality Eddie Blay, questioned the credibility of the VGMA.
Nana Omane  Acheampong also exposed the flaws in the nomination process recently.
